Buzz realizes he is a toy after all after watching a TV commercial. He tries to fly but falls, breaking his arm and suffering a mental breakdown. After Sid’s toys fix Buzz, Sid ties Buzz to a rocket, planning to blow him up the next day. Overnight, Woody helps Buzz realize that his purpose is to make Andy happy, restoring Buzz’s resolve. Sid takes Buzz out to blow him up, but Woody summons the mutant toys to “break the rules” and scare Sid into never hurting toys again.
Freed, Buzz and Woody chase after the Davises’ truck, but Scud attacks Woody. Buzz stays to fight off the puppies; Woody climbs into the truck and pushes RC out to save Buzz. The other toys, thinking Woody killed another toy, throw him out of the truck as well. Buzz and Woody chase after the truck on RC, which the other toys see and realize their mistake. RC’s battery dies, and Woody has to ignite the rocket tied to Buzz. Buzz spreads his wings and cuts the tape before the rocket explodes; he and Woody slide through the sunroof of Mrs. Davis’ car and land safely inside.
As the toys eavesdrop on the opening of Christmas presents in the new house, Mr. Potato Head is delighted to see Molly getting a Mrs. Potato Head.
